Due to continued growth, an opportunity exists to join Sunsuper as an Investment/Portfolio Manager in our Sydney office working within the Hedge Funds & Alternative Strategies team which is responsible for around $3b in the HF&AS portfolio.

 

About the Role...

In this newly created role, you will work with the members of the Hedge Funds & Alternative Strategies team, the Hedge Funds advisor, Aksia, Investment Managers, and other colleagues at Sunsuper to devise, implement and manage nominated investments within Sunsuper’s ongoing Hedge Funds & Alternative Strategies investment program.

 

Specifically, you will be involved in:

  • Supporting the development of the overall strategies for nominated Hedge Fund & Alternative Strategy investment portfolios that take into account objectives and constraints for these portfolios as approved by the Sunsuper Board.
  • Establishing and maintaining close working relationships with managers, advisors and co-investors to Sunsuper.
  • Maintaining records of interactions with consultants, managers and other existing and potential service providers, via BackStop.
  • Identifying and negotiating the acquisition or disposal of appropriate investments to fulfil the agreed investment strategies in Hedge Funds & Alternative Strategies including managing the initial assessment and the due diligence process required for various investments including co-investment transactions and pooled fund investments.
  • Working closely with other members of the Hedge Funds & Alternative Strategies team, and Sunsuper’s Middle office (Legal, Tax, Investment Administration), to negotiate key commercial terms, develop legal documentation with counter-parties, and establish and maintain multiple investment structures that successfully implement the investment program. This includes funds of one, special purposes vehicles, co-investments, and seed funding of co-mingled vehicles.
  • Undertaking market research and analysis and helping to develop recommendations for relevant managers for the portfolio.
  • Making appropriate recommendations to the Investment Recommendation Committee with the approval of the Manager, Hedge Funds & Alternative Strategies.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the status of existing funds and co-investments (including reviewing Board papers where applicable.
  • Representing Sunsuper on relevant advisory committees (overseas) and at relevant industry events. Developing and maintaining a strong network and has productive relationships with industry colleagues.
  • Providing constructive feedback to other members of the Investment Strategy team as required on their proposed strategies and manager configurations.
  • Assisting to ensure consistency and accuracy of manager and custodian data for returns and risk measures, cashflows, and fee data. This requires working closely with Sunsuper’s Investment Administration team, Aksia, Managers, and Sunsuper’s custodian where appropriate.

About You...

You will possess strong teamwork, relationship management, influencing and negotiation skills along with effective presentation, verbal and report writing skills.

 

To be successful in this role you must have the following:

  • 10+ years investment industry experience.
  • Tertiary qualification, preferably in finance, accounting, economics, commerce, law, mathematics or a related discipline.
  • Lateral thinker, clear strategic thinker with an ability to turn sensible thoughts into action.
  • Advanced analytical and numerical skills, including advanced skills in Excel and other relevant financial software.
  • The ability to apply investment and financial markets knowledge and experience in the assessment of investment opportunities. Specific experience in Alternatives (Hedge Funds, Liquid Alternatives) is required.
  • Demonstrates sound familiarisation with the market environment.
  • Effective goal-oriented scheduling skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and manage resources (time, people, budget) to achieve objectives.
  • Applies effective qualitative and quantitative techniques and can interpret outputs to arrive at recommendations.
