About the Drug Discovery Group:

The Drug Discovery Group has been intimately involved in the development of a family of natural products with utility in the cancer/wound healing arenas. We are now turning our focus to neurodegenerative disease and investigating a suite of unrelated compounds that might be useful as novel neuroprotective agents.


Role Purpose / Responsibilities :

The following duties will apply:

  • Assist in the culture of neural stem cells (NSCs), neurons, astroglia and microglia.
  • Perform cell based screens aimed at identifying natural products with neuroprotective potential.
  • Perform animal related work to supplement both mechanism of action and subsequent toxicity studies.
  • Provide cell culture and animal support to other projects running within the lab (cancer/wound healing related).
  • Help with the day-to-day running of the lab environment.


About you:

To be appointed as a Research Assistant you should have at least an Honour's degree in biomedical science or equivalent experience. Exceptional organisational skills, the ability to work in a team environment and previous experience in cell culture (particularly NSCs and related cell types)/cell biology/microtitre plate technologies are required. The ability to learn new techniques rapidly and execute work to strict deadlines would also be beneficial. Experience in the handling and culture of induced pluripotent stem cells would be desirable.
