About the role: 
Due to an internal promotion, we are currently seeking an Associate General Counsel to be based in our South Brisbane office.
Reporting to the General Counsel, the scope of your role will be to provide legal advice and assistance to Peabody’s Australian business with a focus on operational, exploration, infrastructure and sales support.  You will cover a broad range of coal mining related matters including environmental, safety, tenements, procurement and employment.
Duties will include:
  • Advice regarding the requirements of laws and regulations
  • Drafting, amending, reviewing and negotiating contracts
  • Provide advice and guidance relating to obtaining and maintaining mining tenements and rights to mine coal in New South Wales and Queensland
  • Provide advice and guidance relating to joint venture arrangements or other strategic alliances
  • Provide advice and guidance relating to the buying and selling of coal, and the services required to transport and deliver coal to buyers
  • Defence of claims against Peabody and pursuit of claims by Peabody
  • Engage, instruct and supervise outside counsel when external advice is appropriate
The lifestyle:
This position is offered on a Monday to Friday basis with occasional travel. Peabody has recently introduced ‘Summer Hours’ giving employees flexibility to finish at noon on Fridays for 6 months of the year commencing in October.
About you:
  • Must hold and continue to hold a solicitor’s Practising Certificate valid in any Australian jurisdiction (restricted or unrestricted)
  • Must have 8 years or more post admission experience
  • Familiarity or experience in the resources industry is highly desirable
