The opportunity 

Right now, Roads and Maritime Services in the process of delivering an ambitious $51.2 billion investment into building a future-ready transport system, mobilising new project teams every day to make big things happen in the infrastructure space. We currently have a great opportunity for a seasoned Design Lead to provide expert conceptual design advice and resolve complex design issues as part of our high performing Motorways team within RMS.

As Design Lead working on a high-value pipeline of world-class infrastructure projects, you will manage our external contractors to deliver effective and cost efficient strategic and concept specialist motorways designs. You will work closely with our private sector partners, while representing the interests of RMS as a government client. Your role will ensure that optimal design decisions are made through the promotion of a culture of collaboration, innovation and creativity across the whole delivery team. In this dynamic role, you will enjoy being challenged by the complexity and variety of our projects and take pride in your ability to find solutions where others only see problems.

Ideal skills, experience and personal attributes

In addition to holding relevant tertiary qualifications, you also bring with you a wealth of design experience, developed across large scale infrastructure projects. We are looking for a relationship builder who will build mutually beneficial bridges between our agency and private sector consultants and contractors. 
Significant interaction with stakeholders and government agencies will be required so a  proven background  in presentation, negotiation skills plus technical knowledge to find the best result for the project quickly and effectively are highly desirable.
You have a technical understanding of concepts related to road design, ventilation, tunnelling, urban design, mechanical, electrical, civil and intrastructure engineering, but you also have the ability to communicate clearly and simply with professionals across all disciplines.

Essential requirements

Tertiary degree qualifications in Civil or Structural Engineering from an Australian University or equivalent and demonstrated ability to effectively manage complex contracts
Ten years’ experience in design having previously managed own large scale projects through to delivery
Experience in working with key Government Agencies (TfNSW, INSW, NSW Treasury)
Experience in the development, delivery and construction of large scale transport infrastructure projects (>$1B) and in some cases involving Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and Design and Construct (D&C) delivery models
Experience with D&C and Government processes including, assurance review, audits reporting contract management safety etc. 
Proven capacity to analyse complex design issues, use advanced problem solving skills and make balanced and ethical judgements that balances competing design requirements and the management of technical risk in major infrastructure projects.
Demonstrated ability to negotiate, devise and justify appropriately safe, constructible solutions to constrained physical and budget situations that require management of the risk associated with departures from currently approved design standards.
Proven ability to communicate and lead technically diverse design teams, with a minimum of ten years management/supervisory experience
A current and valid Australian Drivers License is required.
