The Project:

The Department of Clinical Medicine is seeking a capable Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Research Fellow to investigate genetic and biochemical factors impacting visual system and brain.

The project will involve investigating the neuroprotective effects of the drugs and identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying these changes. The study will involve establishing transgenic animal colonies, drug administration to the animal models, genetic modulations using adeno-associated viral constructs, performing electrophysiology and imaging experiments followed by biochemical and histochemical analysis of the tissues. It is anticipated that the project will generate new research directions for high quality publications with the hope to attract further research funding.

The Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for co-ordinating the research projects of the Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences Group at Macquarie University and will get an opportunity to work in a joint industry-academic research project. Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Study coordination
  • Undertaking ocular testing schedules
  • Maintenance of data integrity, data collection, management and analysis
  • Report and publication preparation
  • Grant writing
  • Presentation of findings at national and international meetings
  • Support and supervision to higher degree research students

The position involves interacting with researchers and industry partners to facilitate collaborative research projects and may also be involved in supporting the group’s wider research interests in Vision and neuroscience research areas where required.

Selection criteria

To be considered for this position, applicants must:

Essential:

  • PhD in Vision Sciences, Neurosciences or related biomedical disciplines such as biochemistry, molecular biology or cell biology.
  • Demonstrated high level skills in animal experiments including establishing and working with transgenic mice colonies and administration of compounds.
  • Demonstrated track record in publishing in high quality journals, keeping laboratory records, compilation of scientific documents, from conception of ideas to publication of manuscripts.
  • Demonstrated evidence of written and verbal communication skills to consult and negotiate with other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both as team member and as an individual, as evidenced by the ability to prioritise tasks and make decisions as required.
  • Innovative approach, with the ability to self-direct research projects and supervise students.
  • Demonstrated evidence of an understanding of data management, data analysis and knowledge of statistical analysis methods.

Desirable:

  • Experience in Visual electrophysiology recordings, histochemical and biochemical/ molecular biology techniques in the field of Vision Sciences or Neurosciences
  • Publication track record in Vision Research.

Salary Package: (Level A – Postdoctoral Research Fellow) base salary from $90,188 to $96,655 p.a. or (Level B – Research Fellow) base salary from $101,877 to $120,537 p.a., plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.

Appointment Type: Full time, 3 year fixed term position.
