Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a Senior Associate with a background in both environment and planning law to join our Melbourne, Environment & Planning team. Working closely with Mark Beaufoy, you will be responsible for varied challenging complex legal work which often sets the pace in the market. In this role you will have experience in a broad range of planning and environmental matters (across a range of sectors) including planning appeals, planning scheme amendments, major project approvals including Commonwealth and State environmental impact assessment, environmental due diligence in property and business transactions and advice and representation in environmental regulatory and compliance matters.

Ideally you will have Victorian planning and environment experience in advising on the breath of planning and environmental issues including planning scheme amendments, planning permit applications, PSPs, GAIC, infrastructure contributions, compulsory land acquisition, native title, EPBC Act matters, cultural heritage, native vegetation and biodiversity matters, contaminated land, pollution and waste. However, similar experience in other jurisdictions will also be considered.

As a Senior Associate you will be expected to maintain your client and referral networks to enhance development of the practice and be actively involved in relevant industry associations and industry related issues. You will have proven experience in assistance in the management of junior lawyers and teams and allocating resources to ensure the efficient and effective utilisation of solicitor skill sets. You will be expected to contribute to the development of the practice so that commercially sensible and innovative solutions are provided to our clients.

About the Team

Our Environment & Planning team form part of the Projects and Real Estate team who advise on all facets of projects and the management and resolution of disputes in the building, engineering, real estate and resources sectors to deliver cost effective solutions to clients. We act for major contractors, prominent property owners and the leading players involved in project/infrastructure financing. It is very important to us how our team works together. We work hard and have fun while delivering cost effective solutions to clients. We regularly work in close team with our colleagues in other team across the firm, in particular Real Estate, Projects, M&A and Dispute Resolution.

Our Melbourne Environment & Planning team also acts for clients across the industrials & consumer and government sectors (including Commonwealth, State and local government). We work closely with our national Environment & Planning teams in the Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

You will have:

  • excellent analytical, communication and research skills - to deliver prompt and commercially astute advice
  • strong commitment to client service and well-developed relationship management ability - you will play a key role in supporting and actively developing our relationships with our clients
  • team focus - to mentor junior colleagues and ensure the effective utilisation of the group
  • enthusiasm to be involved in business development activities – experience presenting at industry and / or client related seminars / conferences and managing strategic relationships and networks, ideally with a history of publications in industry related publications, firm client updates and/or academic journals.
  • first rate experience of drafting legal advice and documents (including section 173 and other statutory agreements, contracts, deeds, VCAT / court documents etc).

You will have recognised experience gained in a similar environment and enjoy working as part of a committed team.
