Salary package: $85,023 - $89,370 per annum plus 17% superannuation

Position overview

The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) has high-level engineering and scientific teams that develop innovative state-of-the-art instrumentation for astronomy, space applications, laser communications and advanced materials. The AITC is participating in the billion-dollar international Giant Magellan Telescope project, as well as supporting development and upgrades of existing RSAA telescopes and building instruments for international partners. The AITC offers end-to-end professional services and capability for the design, manufacture, integration and test of precision instrumentation and complex systems.

The AITC Program requires a highly skilled technical workshop officer to manufacture specialized and precision parts for the development of astronomy opto-mechanical systems. In addition to this, the person in this position will provide technical expertise for the assembly, maintenance and improvements of such designs. The workshop technical officer will provide expert advice and support to the engineering team during assembly and testing of those systems. Under the broad direction of the Mechanical and Systems Engineering Group Lead, the Workshop Technical Officer ensures day-to-day operation of the precision mechanical workshop, supports the AITC testing facilities and offers specialised advice to project teams during integration and testing stages.
