Job description:

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

AHPRA has an internal National Legal Practice comprised of a number of specific Units. One particular Unit, the Professional Misconduct Unit, handles all disciplinary matters referred to the responsible Tribunal in each state and territory.

AHPRA is now seeking a National Manager (Legal) to lead the Professional Misconduct Unit. .

This is a full time, fixed term twelve-month position which can be based in any AHPRA office.

In this role you will:

  • Provide technical and operational legal advice in respect of disciplinary matters arising under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law;
  • Assess complex, high profile cases of national relevance and recommend strategies ensuring high risk issues are managed in line with AHPRA’s principles;
  • Provide advice and guidance in respect of major investigations;
  • Develop and manage a range of stakeholder relationships both internally and externally that support both AHPRA and the National Boards to exercise their functions;
  • Lead the staff of the Professional Misconduct Unit and contribute to the broader leadership of the National Legal Practice.

As the ideal candidate, you will demonstrate the following:

  • Admission as a legal practitioner to any state or territory and holds an unrestricted practicing certificate.
  • Significant leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated legal skills and experience.
  • Outstanding communication skills, ability to liaise, negotiate, consult, resolve conflict and manage change at a senior level in complex organisations.
  • Outstanding analytical, conceptual and investigative skills particularly in relation to analysing evidence and reporting on complex issues.
