ABOUT THE ROLE

 

The Community Umpiring Development Manager will collaboratively develop, implement and oversee a national Community Umpiring Development strategy in consultation with all State/Territory bodies that drives growth in umpire participation through increased recruitment and retention; high quality umpiring performance through education and development programs that promote inclusive, sustainable and quality environments.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Umpire Performance

Regularly review, modify and improve:

  • The national umpiring curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of community umpires.
  • The national accreditation system/program that applies to umpires and umpire coaches to ensure they are both engaging, meaningful and produce better qualified and prepared community umpires.

Umpire Recruitment

  • Develop and implement a marketing and promotional strategies/initiatives to increase community umpire recruitment.
  • Manage and co-ordinate the AFL Umpire Appearance Program, the AFL Community Umpiring Round and the “Umpire.AFL” social media platforms.
  • Understand the key challenges and issues that face community umpiring to identify and deliver solutions that result in meaningful improvement.

Umpire Retention

  • Plan and facilitate opportunities to share Community Umpiring Group best practice (blueprint) with interested external umpiring stakeholder groups and leagues.
  • Investigate the possibility of establishing an umpiring specific “community club improvement program” as per that for community football clubs.

Umpire Resources

  • Develop and disseminate national resources that support the recruitment and development of umpires at community level.
  • Develop and maintain a dynamic central technology portal where all community umpiring resources can be readily accessed.

Umpire Diversity

  • Develop and implement strategies/initiatives to increase the recruitment and retention of umpires from diverse backgrounds (Female, Multicultural and Indigenous).
  • Manage and co-ordinate the umpiring program at the AFL Diversity Championships or similar State/Territory based programs/events.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with State and Community Umpiring personnel.

  • Experience in sports management/development or similar
  • High level problem solving skills.
  • Ability to reach objective conclusions after appropriate consultation
  • Comprehensive understanding of AFL football
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent presentation skills including verbal and written communications
  • Sound knowledge of the Laws of Australian Football
  • Budget management experience and skills
  • Experience in stakeholder management and engagement
  • Ability to identify future challenges and develop plans to address them
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Collaboration, negotiation and influencing skills
