ABOUT THE ROLE

 

The Coaching and Talent Manager role will be responsible for the development, maintenance and evolution of a national umpiring coaching and talent philosophy to be adopted across all AFL managed competitions and programs to promote and deliver consistency, alignment and a best practice environment.

 

This is a 2 year fixed term role.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

 

The Coaching and Talent Manager will focus on managing and delivering a best practice officiating program/environment along with the staff and resources for it to flourish across all AFL managed competitions and talent pathway programs including overseeing and/or being responsible for the following across field, boundary and goal umpiring:

 

  • Developing, maintaining and evolving a national umpiring coaching and talent philosophy including related framework as well as a long-term plan for the same.
  • The appointment, development and performance management of the direct reports listed above.
  • The overall direction of umpiring in all AFL competitions:  AFL, AFLW, national underage championships, AFLX, etc.
  • The contracting, performance assessment, coaching, professional (umpiring) and personal development of all umpires officiating in AFL competitions and talent pathway programs.
  • The management of the AFL Umpiring list and the talent pathway that will be required to replenish it.
  • Diversifying the umpire talent pathway and, in time, the AFL umpiring ranks.
  • Creating and managing a strong alignment with State Leagues in terms of umpire coaching and performance assessment within the traditional men’s competitions and the emerging women’s leagues.
  • Developing and educating a select group of talented umpires in the pathway to manage the transition into the AFL and AFLW competitions including the role that the U16/U18 national and diversity championships (boys and girls) play in the umpire pathway.
  • Contributing to the national strategy for community umpiring development to better promote the acquisition, training and retention of the 15,000 accredited umpires that officiate in the thousands of games that take place each weekend in over 200 leagues around the country.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent presentation skills including verbal and written communications
  • Demonstrated experience in educating and building the capacity of talented young athletes
  • Sound knowledge of the Laws of Australian Football
  • Budget management experience and skills
  • Ability to manage complex and high profile issues
  • Experience in stakeholder management and engagement
  • Ability to identify future challenges and develop plans to address them
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Collaboration, negotiation and influencing skills
