The primary responsibilities of an Assistant Category Manager will include however not be limited to:


  • Use your ACM / Buying experience and look after one of the most exciting Woolworths categories

  • Buying focus with more emphasis on the promotional side

  • Create and develop credibility and negotiate with our suppliers

  • Increase your sales and profit through strategic program effectiveness

  • Use your high level of data analysis to get results

  • Deliver an optimum range via a planned review schedule offering choice that is store tailored, reflective of the category roles, incorporating changing customer trends and utilising focused customer insight

  • Invest time with Category Manager in stores, vendors, visiting manufacturers, conducting competitor analysis through store visits

  • Identify new opportunities that are better for the customer, simpler to execute for stores and reduce CODB for Woolworths

  • Understand supplier base capability and constantly identify opportunities and seek and nurture new supplier relationships which will deliver long term competitive advantage for Woolworths

  • Regularly review the levels of Dumps, Clearance, Out of Code, Unknown and Known shrinkage and review the root causes and apply actions to minimise these losses

  • Negotiate contracts, deliver COGS reductions and more favourable terms and conditions for Woolworths whilst setting very clear expectations with the right Customer insight driven vendors and suppliers

  • Ensure range is easy to shop, holds the right stock weight, has appropriate DOS holding and utilising the most effective fixture mechanics


** Note that as this role requires frequent on road travel, a company car will be provided in the package! There will also need to be some flexibility with start and finish times.

To be successful you will have:


  • Previous buying / ACM or relevent store experience

  • A proven track record of sound commercial acumen

  • Be customer centric and able to develop a customer focused Category Plan

  • Demonstrated the ability to negotiate and influence with cross functional and external stakeholders

  • An innovation and continuous improvement focused mentality

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • The ability to use customer insights and data to make strategic and commercial business decisions

  • Proven ability of delivering against KPIs within previous roles

  • Experience planning a strong promotional program to maximise sales and profit opportunities
