About the Business

Our Ground Transportation Systems operations delivers significant transport infrastructure projects including rail signalling solutions, ticketing systems, and road tolling facilities. GTS has a core competency managing systems integration, commissioning and maintenance across security, communications, rail signalling and CCTV.

Our Secure Communications and Information Systems (SIX) BU designs, integrates and supports C4ISR, Electronic Warfare and Cyber Security systems. The business unit’s primary customer is the Australian Department of Defence and other Commonwealth agencies.

About the Role

As part of the Ground Transportation Systems and Secure Communications & Information Systems Country Business Unit (CBU), the Business Process Improvement Coordinator is responsible for safely and efficiently managing continuous improvement initiatives and innovations to improve value add to the customer. 

The Business Process Improvement Coordinator  is responsible for Lean deployment throughout GTS-SIX, with particular emphasis in the Operations team. This position plays a key co-ordination role in Lean, ensures methodical support of GTS-SIX staff and animates Lean dynamics through coaching and communication.

Key responsibilities:
  • Manage and develop manufacturing processes required to support current projects and activities. Including entire product life cycle, in particular:
         - Design phase of flow during the bid process
         - Operational manufacturing / process flow, ensuring full integration of all               constraints following the principles of “Design for Manufacture” and                    “Design to Cost”
  • The definition, setup, preparation and optimization of Lean manufacturing/operational process - facilitating innovation to reduce costs and improve workflows, guaranteeing feasibility and reproducibility of the process
  • Facilitate teams in value stream mapping, value stream design, Lean line design, Lean logistics and process
  • Manage potential improvements and initiatives in line with Thales Lean Production System 
  • Coach and mentor employees in the use of Lean tools
  • Coordinate visual management system/s on the Production Floor and in office space, including projects
  • Work with Team Leaders/Supervisors/Managers to ensure on the job training is carried out and documented
Skills, qualifications and experience
  • University degree qualified in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Graduate Certificate in Management
  • Lean Six Sigma – Black Belt
  • 10 years of experience within a manufacturing and operations environment
  • Experience with manufacturing of complex systems in small to large quantities
  • Knowledge and experience in Lean Manufacturing, People Management (Coaching), Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
  • Excellent communication skills along with strong leadership capability 
  • Thorough knowledge in Manufacturing Engineering
  • Familiar with and able to apply the requirements of MRP, MES and Level Pull planning
  • Experience in a Defence manufacturing industry highly desirable, though not essential 
  • CINCOM or LN ERP experience desirable
