About the role:
We are currently accepting applications for the position of Study Manager for a life extension project for our North Goonyella Underground Coal Mine.  The GLB2 Project is a Brownfield mine life extension that will access coal reserves below the current longwall mining operations to enable continued production of hard coking coal to well beyond 2040.   

As the Study Manager, you will be part of the Corporate studies team based in Brisbane reporting to the Senior Director Studies and will be responsible for managing the project from pre-feasibility stage through to project execution.  The position also has dotted line reporting and accountability to the North Goonyella General Manager.  Initially, periodic travel to site will be required.  It is anticipated that as the project progresses towards execution phase the frequency of travel to site will increase.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Facilitating and reporting to a Project Steering Committee of Corporate and North Goonyella Mine based stakeholders
  • Preparation of project budgets and schedules, managing and reporting to maintain the project on time and to plan
  • Preparation of reports, data and presentations as required to support mining and environmental approvals, studies documentation, and Peabody internal Life of Mine (LOM) and Project Pipeline processes
  • Liaison with Government Departments on application and grant of required mining and environmental approvals
  • Development of evaluation studies including aspects of options for consideration, mining, environmental, infrastructure, services, logistics and operating and capital costs
  • Liaison with mine-site personnel to assess and consider operational interactions between current operations and the project to optimise project outcomes and value
  • Facilitation and completion of risk assessments, risk mitigation and sensitivity analysis of the project
  • Engagement and management of consultants / contractors for the project in accordance with Peabody and North Goonyella Mine procurement and contractor / consultant management systems and processes
  • Preparation of inputs for and overseeing development of economic evaluation and financial modelling of the project options
  • Preparation for and facilitation of stage gating of the project in accordance with Peabody’s Major Capital Projects governance process, including Board Approval
  • If and as required, assist with other Peabody Concept and Pre-feasibility studies, technical assurance reviews or Corporate projects

About You:
The person we are looking for has operational experience teamed with previous project management experience (including prefeasibility through to execution) of underground coal brownfield and/or greenfield projects.

  • Degree qualification in Mining, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Demonstrated experience managing underground coal projects of a similar size and scope
  • Experience executing a brownfield project at an existing coal operation is desirable 
  • Sound experience in contractor management, capital project cost and schedule management / delivery
  • Underground coal operational experience covering a number of technical areas which may include e.g. gas, conveyors, ventilation, mine planning, coal processing, financial evaluation, environmental approvals and management and production and supervision
  • Good understanding of technical design packages
  • Thorough knowledge of safety standards and systems with practical demonstration of skills essential
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and management skills
  • Capacity to motivate, lead and boost morale
  • Effective time management and logical decision-making skills
