About the role

Mater is seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Director of Neonatology at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals, Brisbane. This Senior Specialist Neonatologist role is a full-time permanent position, and is being offered as part of an organisational re-structure within the clinical stream of Mothers Babies and Women’s Health.   

Our world-class quaternary maternity facility is located in Brisbane’s South Bank precinct, and is the largest facility of its kind in Australia.  With a co-located research institute, clinical school and Harvard-affiliated simulation centre, Mater is recognised as a leader in maternity, neonatal and women’s health care.The Mater Mother’s Hospital is a 200-bed 79-cot dedicated women’s hospital servicing both public and private funded patients, managing more than 10000 births, 2000 neonatal admissions and 850 intensive care admissions each year, plus at least 100 neonatal retrievals and 150 back transfers. The Mater Mothers Hospitals are the regional referral centre for fetal abnormalities. Situated adjacent to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Mater provides highly specialised and complex care as a perinatal tertiary referral centre, the south-east and central Queensland surgical referral centre, and the Queensland cardiac referral centre.   

What you will be doing

The successful appointee will have the unique opportunity to rethink the clinical and operational aspects of care delivery, to influence the critical decisions as to how new funding and new clinical positions will be established, and define the organisational structure of the service.  Reporting to the Head of the Clinical Stream, the Director of Neonatology is responsible for overseeing the redesign, measurement, evaluation, integration and delivery of neonatal services that generate high value, low variability healthcare.     In addition, the Director of Neonatology role is expected to:

·         Provide clinical leadership and accountability within NCCU;

·         Foster strong relationships with both senior and junior Medical, Nursing and Allied Health staff;

·         Champion patient-centred care;

·         Actively develop and promote teaching and research activities;

·         Develop and strengthen community, university, professional bodies, government and non-government agency affiliation with the Hospital

·         Strategically develop the NCCU in line with Mater’s Values and the organisation’s strategic direction (

About you

This is a critical role in ensuring Mater continues to be recognized as a national and international leader in newborn care.   Applicants for this role should have high level clinical knowledge and experience in contemporary neonatology care, have excellent interpersonal and team skills and have a proven commitment to teaching and excellence in provision of safe quality patient care. Previous managerial experience would be advantageous.Candidates must be registered as a specialist medical practitioner in Australia, have completed approved training in Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine by RACP or equivalent and hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

A higher research or management qualification would be highly regarded but not essential.
