Career information: Engineering

One of the attractions of pursuing an engineering career is the huge variety of tasks and environments in which engineers find themselves working in.

Engineering jobs in Australia can include designing programs at a computer terminal, to overseeing maintenance operations for major structures like aircraft, ships, heavy earth moving equipment, mobile cranes and offshore oil platforms – there are many ways to be an engineer.

A great deal of engineering work is done with the aid of computers. This can range from design, testing, the control of systems, the direction of equipment and the analysis of the properties of materials.

A Bachelor degree in Engineering is the minimum qualification required for Engineer job applicants with strong demonstrable skills in science and mathematics and information technology very beneficial.

Historically, mainstream engineering was divided into the four broad disciplines of chemical, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, with several branches within each discipline covering an enormous range of fields. A brief description of the key engineering disciplines are detailed below:

  • Chemical engineers study the transformation process of raw materials into usable end products.
  • Civil engineers are involved in the planning, design and construction of the built environment and the physical infrastructure that supports modern society. This encompasses all forms of construction, including bridges, dams, sewerage systems, large buildings, railways and harbours.
  • Electrical engineers are responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining the systems used for the generation, transmission and utilisation of electricity.
  • Electronics engineers specialise in the use of electronics, such as those found in computer, communication and telecommunication systems.
  • Environmental engineers assess and manage the effects of human and other activity on the natural environment.
  • Mechanical engineers design, organise and manage the construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Mining engineers specialise in mine development and management, extractive technology, mine reclamation and minerals processing.

Today, we are seeing the emergence of new disciplines of engineering with Australia offering a multitude of job opportunities and career pathways in the Engineering industry as detailed below:
