The Opportunity

The Office of Best Practice Regulation (OBPR) located in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) is seeking a talented individual to lead work across to the Australian Public Service on promoting high quality Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) for decision making.

As the Executive Director of the OBPR, you will lead the preparation of advice to Cabinet and make public assessments on the quality of analysis that is used to inform significant policy decisions. You will be capable of quickly deconstructing complex and sometimes sensitive policy matters across the entire policy spectrum, and leading a talented team to analyse the impacts of proposed government policies on the Australian community.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will be someone who excels at working collaboratively within government and with external stakeholders. Your clear and effective communication skills will be essential to providing guidance to support the quality of RIA, and in building consensus on difficult policy proposals, including those taken by the Council of Australian Governments. You will need to show balance and, at times, be resolute in providing frank advice to Ministers on the quality of RIA when required.

As a part of the senior executive in a central agency, your ability to think strategically will also support PM&C to identify emerging trends across the policy spectrum, and provide high quality advice on the interventions being considered. You will play a key role in bringing the emerging array of complementary evidence-based policy tools together, including the work of the data analytic hubs and the incorporation of behavioural insights. Your work with RIA experts in states and territory governments will help to build broader RIA capability, and also establish RIA as an enabler of evaluation within the policy life-cycle process.
