Job description:

Australian Unity is a national health, wealth and living organisation with $1 billion in revenue, and provides services to more than 750,000 Australians.  We are a mutual organisation with over 320,000 members and employ over 7,000 people.  Our ambition is enable millions to thrive.

Your role

Australian Unity currently operates 18 retirement villages, 6 aged care facilities and a broad-ranging home and disability services business in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.  An exciting opportunity has become available to join our Independent and Assisted Living team in South Melbourne as Legal Counsel. You will be employed in one of the fastest growing industries in Australia, with the best of both legal worlds - working within a medium sized practice which has a close relationship with the business, while enjoying the support of a larger network of in-house lawyers and experienced staff.

In this role you will become a valued member of a stable and supportive team with the opportunity to work in a broad legal practice which includes contract reviews and drafting, aged care and disability regulatory matters, reviewing marketing and consumer facing documentation, assisting with the development of governance documentation and general commercial law.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting consultancy and supplier agreements
  • Reviewing marketing and client-facing materials and documents
  • Managing dispute and complaint resolution matters
  • Providing timely advice to the Independent and Assisted Living business regarding the implementation of legislative changes
  • Occasional business and property acquisitions

This role may also require intermittent travel to our sites within Victoria and NSW.  Please include a cover letter and CV for your application to be considered.

About you

Reporting to one of two Senior Legal Counsels in the team, and working amongst a wider group of legal, compliance, risk and quality assurance professionals, you will be a commercially astute lawyer with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work autonomously when appropriate.  Initiative and a willingness to work with people of all levels will set you up for success, as will exemplary communication, drafting, negotiation and interpersonal skills.

At least four years’ experience in either private legal practice or in an in-house legal team is required, along with a current practicing certificate. With a background in general commercial law or litigation, some knowledge of the aged care or retirement industry would also be desirable, but is not essential.

Your environment

Our company is diversified and our opportunities are expansive. We apply energy and focus to achieving goals that benefit our customers, Australian Unity and the community. With leadership programs, wellbeing benefits, performance-based rewards and a friendly work environment, we bring the best out of ourselves and each other.
