Job description:

Personnel Psychologists are employed in the Permanent Air Force to provide behavioural science skills and knowledge in a range of roles including:

  • Organisational/Industrial psychology
  • Occupational, selection and research psychology
  • Training development and delivery
  • Performance enhancement and psychological awareness programs

To be appointed as an Air Force officer under this stream, you must have a four-year/honours degree or postgraduate qualification in psychology and hold full registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Additionally, you are required to have had at least two years’ experience in the provision of psychology services within an operationally focused organisation i.e. providing psychology services that contribute to the everyday outcomes/objectives of an organisation (conducting workplace assessments and interventions, producing reports, conducting training, providing analysis of personnel processes or procedures, involved in personnel selection). We are looking for people with organisational psychology skills (optimising personnel and organisational outcomes) as opposed to just clinical skills (providing therapeutic services to individuals).

To be eligible for this position, you must hold Australian citizenship and be able to complete a 10 year checkable background assessment. Australian Citizenship is a requirement for a security clearance and a clearance will only be granted to a non-citizen in exceptional circumstances.

As a member of the full-time Air Force, you will complete Officer’s Training School which is 17 weeks training at RAAF Base East Sale. Other training courses you will complete include the Aeromedical Evacuation (4 weeks) and Aeromedical Transport (1 week).

Upon completion of your training requirements, you could be posted to any one of these Air Force bases:

  • Canberra area, including Defence Establishment Fairbairn, ACT
  • RAAF Base East Sale, VIC
  • RAAF Base Wagga, NSW

Upon joining the Air Force you can earn over $84,500 p.a. on completion of initial employment training. This figure includes Uniform and Service allowances and applies to full-time Officer Entry. Salary will continue to increase based on rank and the number of years of service completed in that rank.

In cooperation with the Navy and Army, the Air Force is tasked with the defence of our nation, our people, our values and our way of life. We achieve this by:

  • controlling the air,
  • acquiring intelligence through reconnaissance and surveillance,
  • providing air mobility for all operational needs, and
  • supporting combat missions through a strike capability.

As the defence landscape changes and Australia faces threats from within as well as overseas, the Air Force adapts and evolves to maintain optimum capability. To resource this need we:

  • operate some of the most technically-advanced aircraft in the skies,
  • deploy cutting-edge intelligence and communications technology,
  • employ Australia's best and brightest men and women, and
  • train, educate and reward our personnel to perform at their peak.

In addition to defending our nation, the Air Force supports a broad range of operations in Australia and overseas, including:

  • supporting international security and counter-terrorism initiatives,
  • protecting our borders from illegal activity and incursions,
  • carrying out search and rescue missions,
  • supporting peacekeeping operations, and
  • helping communities affected by natural disasters.
