ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Regional Manager – Northern NSW this position involves the management and execution of all duties related to the effective delivery of all initiatives and activities around the recruitment, education and retention of umpires within the AFL NSW/ACT’s Northern NSW Region (spanning from the Central Coast to Coffs Harbour and west to Tamworth). The AFL is strongly committed to ensuring that development and accreditation programs are conducted to maximise the development of umpires for our game.

Please note employment in this position is subject to a satisfactory criminal history record check. The successful candidate is required to possess a valid ‘working with children’ check.

The AFL has extensive procedures and checks in place to protect children and young people in our organisation.

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

  • Provide leadership and engage with umpires and umpire coaches in the groups;
  • Assist in the appointment and review of umpire coaching staff;
  • Develop process to ensure umpires are completing all match day responsibilities including match day paperwork;
  • Investigate match related incidents, code of conduct and behavioural issues and follow up as required in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders;
  • Conduct mid-season and end of year umpire group reviews;
  • Advocate umpiring programs ensuring quality match day environments to clubs;
  • When required, provision of assistance with appointment of umpires to matches and managing club feedback;
  • Coordination of Ball Stewards and umpires to half-time Auskick for any AFL, NAB Challenge, AFLW matches played within the region;
  • Conduct local initiatives in line with the AFL’s National Umpiring Development Strategy.

 

Pathway Programs

  • Identification of talented umpires in conjunction with Umpire Coaches and provision of opportunity through education and representative fixtures;
  • Coordination of successful AFL umpire school-based, female and diversity academies;
  • Coordination of Talent and Independent School competition matches umpire appointments;
  • Participate in the development and running of Pathway Programs within NSW/ACT.

 

Coaching

  • Provide leadership and engage with umpire coaches in the region;
  • Promote the AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program to all coaches;
  • Assist with the development of coaching resources and distribute relevant material to stakeholders;
  • Participate in the development and running of the AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program within NSW/ACT.

  • Demonstrated administration skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with volunteer boards and committees;
  • Demonstrated organisational and planning skills;
  • Excellent relationship management skills;
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Ability to remain effective when faced with changing tasks, responsibilities or people;
  • Demonstrated personal initiative and ability to work effectively unsupervised;
  • Well developed, interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills;
  • Willingness to learn and implement the principles of diversity and inclusion;
  • Satisfactory Working with Children Check;
  • NSW Driver''s License;
  • Due to the nature of the sporting industry must be willing to work outside normal business hours including evenings and weekends;
  • Sound knowledge of sporting environments, preferably Australian Rules Football; and
  • Development Umpire Coach Accreditation.

 

Desirable:

  • Experience with participation based development programs;
  • Proven ability to effectively manage a diverse and extensive portfolio of projects concurrently;
  • Advanced Umpire Coach Accreditation.
